California Smog Check Inspector Practice Test

The Basic program conducts only Tailpipe Smoke Inspection (TSI) tests on a biennial basis. This program is specifically designed for vehicles that fall within certain age and emissions standards, and it focuses on the inspection of tailpipe emissions to ensure compliance with California's air quality regulations.

In this context, the TSI test is a straightforward evaluation of the visible smoke emitted from the tailpipe of vehicles during acceleration. The emphasis is on assessing whether the vehicle emits smoke that exceeds established limits, which can be indicative of mechanical issues or inadequate emissions controls.

Other program areas involve different types of inspections and testing methodologies. For example, the Enhanced program incorporates more comprehensive inspections, including checks for onboard diagnostics in newer vehicles. The Change of Ownership program requires vehicles to be inspected for safety and emissions when ownership changes but is not limited to biennial inspections. Lastly, the Continuous Testing program is an ongoing monitoring effort rather than a biennial inspection.
